A few days of celebration in the Falkland Islands marked the 90th birthday of H M the Queen. Dedications to her began on Monday, 18 April 2016 over Falklands’ Radio with a record by the Strathclyde Police Pipe Band.
On Tuesday evening there was a concert by the wind ensemble and a brass quintet from the Royal Marines’ Band, Collingwood, featuring Hamish Mckee on the bagpipes. Eighty-two people were in attendance and enjoyed the music on the night with Falklands Radio broadcasting a recording of the concert on Wednesday night for radio listeners, especially those in Camp who couldn’t attend the venue.
On Thursday, 21 April 2016 a parade to mark the 90th birthday of H M the Queen was held at Victory Green in Stanley at 1020hrs, with Commodore Bone, Commander British Forces South Atlantic Islands arriving just prior to the arrival of H E the Governor Mr Colin Roberts at 1030hrs. Both H E the Governor and the Commander British Forces inspected the marching contingents after arrival.
Taking part in the parade were contingents of the Army, Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force and the Falkland Islands Defence Force. Leading them all was the Royal marine Band, Collingwood.
Legislative Assembly Members, Government Officers and members of the Youth Organisations also attended the ceremony.
The presence of Her Majesty the Queen was symbolized by raising the Royal Standard on one of the two flagpoles on Victory Green.
A precise 21-gun salute with the Vicars Guns located on Victory Green was undertaken by members of the Falkland Islands Defence Force and there was a fly-past by a Typhoon from MPC at about 1045hrs.
After the event a parade party was held at the FIDF hall where H M the Queen received the first loyal toast of the day. The second was held at a birthday party for invited guests at Government House at lunchtime.
In his remarks the Governor mentioned the purple (violet) badges the Scouts and Cubs wore in commemoration to mark participating in HM The Queen’s Birthday parade. He also mentioned ‘Shakespeare 400’; the start of a year of events to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare was launched at the party.
At 1830hrs H E the Governor Mr Colin Roberts remotely lit a beacon at Dockyard Point next to the Antarctic Memorial. In the South Atlantic Overseas Territories, Beacons were also lit on South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha, St Helena and Ascension Island. A Beacon was also lit in the British Antarctic Territory.
Birthday celebrations ended with a family dance in the Town Hall organized by Team Tranquil from 1900 to 2200hrs. The venue featured traditional Scottish Dancing as well as some local favourites and line dancing. Money raised at the Dance goes towards Team Tranquil’s Community project.
